How To Make Your Own Decorative Quote Book Set
Looking for quote decorative book sets that you can DIY yourself? Check out this tutorial on how to make your quote book set for your home!
A great way to add inspiration to your home is with a decorative quote book set. If you are creative you can make a set yourself.
I first discovered the quote book sets at HPMKT and became obsessed. At the time I was very much about trade accounts and buying directly. The problem was the minimum opening order was not worth the discount.
That said I decided to get creative and make my own set. I knew it couldn’t be that hard since the books seemed to be covered in old encyclopedias. Much to my delight, it was an easy project once I had all the supplies.
Check out the information below to find out how to make your own set today.

Below is the exact decorative book set I made in my living room. It turned out so good I made a second set for my designer bestie as well.
Quotes are abundant online that you recreate for your book set. At the end of this post, I shared some of my favorites that you can duplicate or purchase. If DIY is not your thing there is also a link to design your own custom quote set.
Steps to Make Your Designer Decorative Books:
- Locate an Old Encyclopedia Set
- Gather Your Supplies
- Measure Book Cover
- Crease the Edges
- Wrap The Books
- Add Your Quote Layer
- Style Your Quote Book Set
1. Locate an Old Encyclopedia Set
If you own one Great! If not you can buy an Encyclopedia Set to upcycle on Facebook Market for around $20. Some are listed for FREE too! You will be able to make several book sets with multiple quotes from one set.
When choosing which ones to use pick the thinner books that are around 1 1/2″ thick. Remember that if you have five books stacked the height will be around 8″.
The set that I got from Facebook market was blue but if you can find a neutral set that would be better. A little of the side will be exposed so the lighter color is best.
Pro Tip: A neutral old Encyclopedia Set will be less visible at the sides.
2. Gather Your Supplies
Here is the list of the supplies you will need to make your fake decorative books:
- Old Encyclopedia Set
- Roll of white kraft paper
- 36″ x 48″ Self Healing Cutting Mat
- Ruler with Lip Edge, 4 x 36-Inch
- Rotary Cutter
- 11×17 Paper Ream
You must have a ruler large enough to make nice cuts. If you have a large cutting board it makes measuring a breeze since the measurements are right on the mat.
3. Measure Book Cover
Measure the width and length of the book you have and add a few inches all around. An average book that is 7 1/2″ W x 10 1/4” L x 1 1/2” H would need a rectangular about 13” W x 30” L to cover the book.
If you are covering five books you will need five sheets cut off the roll that measures 13” W x 30” L.
Pro Tip: Select the thinnest books of the set so they can be wrapped easier.
You can print the book cover sheets at office depot or on an 11″ x 17″ printer (if you have one).
The above images show the quote book sheets cut to size and thickness of the encyclopedia book.
4. Crease the Edges
Lay the book in the middle of the craft paper and crease along the edges. Depending on your age your mom may have used this method to cover your books in grammar school back in the day.
5. Wrap The Books
After your edges are creased you will be able to see the imprint. Fold the two sides back lengthwise.
Next, wrap the book as shown and fold the cover ends under so they wrap around the book. Tape the ends inside to keep the cover in place.
6. Add Your Quote Layer
Once all of your books are wrapped with the craft paper you will need to cover them with the 11×17 sheet of paper that has your saying printed exactly in the middle of the page.
Make the height of your letters/ words 1/4” shorter than the height of your books. For a height of 1 1/2” H make your words 1 1/4” high.
A laser printer is best for crisp letters but if you only have access to an inkjet printer that will work as well.
If you have access to a blotter printer you can also print the quote directly in the middle. Just remember the sheet should be about 13” W x 30” L to cover the book.
I would still cover the book with craft paper because it’s thicker and will cover the encyclopedia verbiage.
After you place the book in the center of the printed page crease around it in the same way you did the craft paper.
Since the printed paper is 11×17” use double stick tape and regular tape to secure the printed layer down. You will repeat this process for all books in your quote set series.
As you can see the sides will only fold back about 3/8″ on each side. Remember the book is 10 1/4″ and the paper is 11″.
