1. Location

This is the first step and is super important.

Where will your home gym be located?

Some areas to consider include:

  • Spare Room
  • Basement
  • Garage
  • The Attic

Depending on the equipment you use in your home gym you don’t need a ton of space.

The feature gym in this post is 11′ 5″ x 14′ 7″ which is not huge. As you will see a lot of equipment fits in this space. This home gym is on the main floor on a concrete slab.

Here is a visual of the room dimensions.

In our home, we have a second-floor gym which I talked about in How to Install Rubber Gym Flooring (9 Simple DIY Steps).

Once you know your space you will be able to start planning.

2. Look and feel

To get started with your design you will need some inspiration. A great place to start is on Instagram or Pinterest.

You will want to think about the decor, equipment, color, flooring, and vibe of the space.

Here is some of the inspiration we pulled.

3. Flooring

The next thing you will want to decide is your flooring.

In the featured gym, this took quite some time to decide because the original inspiration was impossible to find.

If you need help with all the flooring options check out this How To Choose The Best Home Gym Floors (Updated).

For the featured gym, the floor selection is the Ecore at Home ECOmax Tiles.

As you can see there are so many color options to choose from.

Description – ECOmax is a square, beveled tile featuring a patented footed system. The 1-inch molded tile is designed specifically for use in weight rooms, while the 2-1/2-inch version is designed for play areas or rooftop patios. ECOmax provides enhanced acoustical performance by dampening the transmission of noise. It also offers superior drainage, continuous under-foot comfort, and tested slip resistance to prevent falls and injuries.

Recommended Uses – Ecore at Home’s ECOmax tiles are one of their most versatile tiles and have been used in several areas including playgrounds, as weight room flooring, as flooring for rooftops, as second-floor gym flooring, as flooring in basements, as garage gym flooring, like Olympic lifting flooring, and much more.

Since the tiles are 15 lbs you do not need glue. This is the glue if you need it for your project for another tile option.

Features

These tiles have a straight edge and are THICK.

The Ecore at Home ECOsmash Tiles are also:

  • Designed to withstand heavy-weight impacts.
  • Slip-resistant and easy to clean and sanitize.

4. Paint Color

According to color theory, blue is a recommended color for home gyms.

That said we chose Metallic Silver 2132-60 which is a blue-grey on the medium intensity scale.

This color is a beautiful compliment to the colors in the wall mural.

A simple cool gray with a hint of blue helps you focus on your workout while still being an inviting and attractive alternative to white.

5. Equipment Ideas

The next factor is what equipment will be in your space. The feature gym has an elliptical machine, treadmill, bike, and a bench.

The gym in our home has a leg machine and bench press. Since there are only two machines it leaves plenty of space to double as my at-home yoga studio too.

There is a weight rack, bar, and dumbbells but those are stored in the corner and open closet.

Make sure to make a Floor Plan of your home gym and the equipment so you know it will fit.

6. Home Gym Wall Inspiration

Having motivational quotes or a wall mural is a great way to stay inspired to work out.

Here are the inspiration images we looked at for this gym project.

The quote and final design was based off this image.

I found the inspiration from the original image but then found the same people separated which worked better for this space. This graphic and others can be purchased HERE.

Next, I created the below graphic mockup which was emailed to the installer. They created the final design and sent a proof for approval.

7. Home Gym Mirror Inspiration

For small spaces adding a mirror wall is a great way to make your room appear larger. We found inspiration on Pinterest for the mirror wall.

Here is what we saved which shows the TV mounted on the wall.

This is the one area that is not complete yet in the featured gym. Once it is finished I’ll share the completed space.

I can’t wait until it’s complete because it’s going to look amazing! Having a mirror wall is great for inspiration because you can watch your muscles as they develop and grow.

It’s a great boost to your self-esteem too!

We also added a wall decal for additional motivation in the gym. This is a constant reminder that your home gym is open 24/7 and there are no excuses my friends!

8. Storage Solutions

The closet in this gym was completely opened up and the doors were removed. This helped make the gym appear larger and created an area for storing the weights, yoga mat, and towels.

The shelves were painted in metallic silver so they blend into the walls.

If you have items you want to store away you can use baskets or freestanding shelves.

Opening your closet will help you stay organized. If there is nowhere to store the clutter it makes you simplify the items you have and purchase.

Eliminating all that doesn’t serve you will help clear your mind and keep you focused.

9. Home Gym Entertainment Inspiration

Not everyone wants the distraction of a TV in their home gym. If you enjoy the TV while you work out you’ll want to think about the ideal placement.

Hanging the TV in the center will allow viewing from all angles.

If you exercise by streaming as I do a TV is a great way to play the workout videos. You can also connect your computer to the larger TV screen.

10. Music

You may want ear pods, a soundbar, or surround sound depending on how you listen to music.

Music is a great way to lift your spirit and inspire you to move your body.

11. Crystals

So you may not be into or understand crystals but I am learning about the power of using them. I am NOT an expert but in my research, I found there are benefits to having crystals in your home gym.

Here are some crystal recommendations:

Tiger Eye

The Tiger eye stone will release fear and anxiety while stimulating action. It will help you focus on your dreams and make them a reality.

Black Onyx

This stone absorbs and transforms negative energy, which will increase stamina and personal power. Black Onyx will take any toxic self-doubts and give you clarity of mind.

Bloodstone

A powerful healing stone that promotes motivation, courage, and confidence. It’s been used since ancient times for protection and to stimulate energy.

I hope all these ideas inspired you to start designing your home gym. Remember that the true transformation will come when you work out for how it makes you feel on the inside NOT how it makes you look on the outside.

Choose to go within and you will finally stick to that exercise routine.

Have a great day full of Unicorns & Rainbows!
