Dorm Room At Home
Now that the college season is here again it’s time that students get creative with their room decor. While many students are going away some have decided to stay home.
A lot has changed when it comes to college and there is definitely a new norm. Gone are the days of only in-person classes. The new college experience has choices when it comes to learning.
The college I teach at is offering students the option of in-person classes and remote. What this means for me, as the professor is, that I teach in person and zoom the remote students in. I’ll let you know how that goes!
My daughter at Hawaii Pacific University chose to have 2 classes in person, 1 class remote and the last 2 are the second half of the fall semester.
Don’t even ask what that’s about because I have no idea why it’s set up that way. Needless to say, she didn’t realize until it was too late that the two classes were not full term.
The point of the story is that students have options. Many have decided to stay home and enjoy the remote learning experience.
Hey, different strokes for different folks, my friends.
If you are reading this because you are looking for ideas to makeover your college bedroom at home or off-campus you are in the right place!
This post is all about Dorm Room At Home bedroom ideas.
College Bedroom Ideas
When it comes to designing your bedroom you must always start by measuring the space. I have said this many times before but it is really important.
You can head to the post How to Measure and Draw a Floor Plan Like A Pro In 9 Easy Steps for instructions. You can also download the FREE measure guide below.
After you know the space you are working with it’s time to get that design started. For the purpose of this post, I am giving you the concept and design.
If you are starting from scratch look at Pinterest and Instagram for ideas. Then you’ll want to create a concept board with your ideas and inspiration.
Next, double-check that all the furniture pieces you sourced will fit in your space. Once you have your road map it’s time to order. That’s when the fun part starts!
Once everything is delivered you can get to put the design together and see your dreams become a reality.
College Dorm Room Design
The featured college bedroom design has a neutral color palette with a pop color of pink. The metal of choice in this space is silver but that can totally be changed out for gold.
Pattern, texture, and artwork all add personality to this space. When designing with a neutral color base it is very easy to update the accent color if you want in the future.
Adding metal elements, crystal, and fur textures all add dimension to the design. The bed is the focal point in this space and that fandoleir is the jewelry!

1. Fandolier for Bedroom
This fandolier is the star of the show in this design. I wanted a chandelier but my daughter requested a fan so this was the perfect compromise.
It is super quiet and there are three LED light settings. The fandolier is controlled by a remote which can be mounted to the wall or side of the bed.

2. Upholstered Bed
The upholstered bed is the focal point in this room design. We placed it in front of the window for a balanced design. The nailhead detail adds a touch of glam to the tufted headboard.
3. Floating Shelf
We needed a creative way to display all the cool Cali-inspired artwork. The floating shelves are perfect to lean the picture frames on. The lip holds them in place so they don’t fall off.
Adding frames in different sizes creates interest and dimension in your space. We combined the shelves with the shadow boxes which would have otherwise stuck out past the bedroom wall art.
As you can see below we used all these elements to tell a story and add personality. It’s also an awesome way to display medals and memorabilia.
4. Dorm Room Drapes
The original drapery panels are from Pottery Barn which were updated with grey grosgrain ribbon. For a similar look, the resource above from Overstock is a great alternative.
The grey stripe border creates a color block effect that will add height and drama to your space. There are multiple lengths and colorways available in these curtains making them perfect for your dorm room at home.
5. Fur Throw
A great way to add a pop of color to your bedroom design is with a super cozy fur throw. It’s the perfect layer of texture and great for those cool nights when you need more warmth.
6. Dorm Room At Home Shadow Box
Shadow Boxes are a great place to keep your sports medals. We used straight pins to attach them to the felt.
If sports are not your thing you can create collages of photos, notes, concert tickets, and other memorable keepsakes. They are awesome reminders to always be grateful for what we have.
7. Picture Frame
To create a gallery wall choose frames in a similar but different finish to add interest and texture. Once you have your frames lay them on the floor to create your design.
Transfer the size of each frame to a piece of craft paper. Next using blue tape add the pieces to the wall in the layout you created.
Then mark where your nails go or use command strips if your frames are light. Hang the artwork one at a time using a level for a professional finish.

8. Boho Bedding
While I love white bedding it’s not practical for the average college student. The reality is they will NOT wash the comforter so if you go for white over time it will discolor.
No one wants that grimy look so we have learned it’s best to go for the print, grey, or another solid color.
This grey Boho Chic mandala Indian medallion floral print on white was the perfect look for the dorm room at home.
9. Closet System
Adding this closet system was the best thing we did. It helps keep everything so organized. We removed the sliding doors so the closet is now completely open.
It gives more of a walk-in closet or cloffice vibe but having the curtains is perfect for those days when it’s a little messy.
10. Neutral Rug
The featured rug was purchased at HomeGoods but this one is very similar. It is so soft and pretty.
Don’t forget to add a rug pad to protect your hardwood floor.
11. Lamp
Add a touch of glam with these crystal table lamps. The above set is available at an awesome price and comes complete with 2 USB charging ports.
These are very similar to the ones we found at HomeGoods. The grey shades are not easy to come by but they add the perfect contrast to the white drapery panels and nightstand.
12. Bedroom Nightstand
These nightstands have an extra shelf and contemporary design. The original pair was from Joss & Main but it’s no longer available.
Adding a pair of nightstands instead of just one creates a more elevated “look and feel” to your dorm bedroom design.
13. Decorative Rhinestone Knob
If you don’t like the look of the knobs from your dresser just change them out! We added these rhinestone knobs to the dresser for a touch of glam. It turned out fabulous!
14. Dresser
This is very similar to the dresser we purchased from Ikea. It’s super clean and pretty! We did also add the glass top option so the dresser stays clean. It’s definitely worth the extra cost.
15. Tufted Ottoman Bench
Another favorite in the room is this fully tufted ottoman from TOV! It’s even prettier in person and it is the perfect accent piece at the foot of the bed.
Above are all the products you will need to create your very own Dorm Room At Home. Remember no matter how this college school year goes always make the best of it.
It may not be what you planned but you can always make the best of the situation!
