Before we get into the products let’s talk about the history of the holiday. You may just think it’s an excuse to eat awesome Mexican food and drink Margaritas but it’s so much more than that.

What does Cinco de Mayo actually celebrate?

Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over Napoleon III’s French forces at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.

You may not know this but Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day (which is September 16) and not everyone in Mexico celebrates the holiday.

What food is eaten on Cinco de Mayo?

A variety of Mexican cuisine is typically eaten during this holiday but the most common are tacos, burritos, fajitas, chips and salsa, and guacamole.

Personally, I want to love guacamole so bad but it makes my throat itchy. Yup, I’m allergic to avocados which is so sad!

If you do not have that issue here is a fabulous recipe you’ll enjoy.

Another favorite food is delicious beef empanadas! I love the beef option but you can get chicken and other fillings as well.

You may also want to try some of these classic Cinco de Mayo dishes:

  • Pico de Gallo Chunky Salsa
  • Fresh Corn & Avocado Salsa
  • Shrimp Ceviche
  • Cheesy Chicken Tostadas
  • Fish Taco With Lime Crema
  • Chicken Enchiladas
  • Cilantro Rice
  • Shrimp Taco Salad
  • Quesadillas

What is the official drink of Cinco de Mayo?

The official classic drink of Cinco de Mayo is the Margarita. Now when it comes to Margaritas there are so many types you can choose from.

Here are some options:

The Classic Margarita

This is a favorite in our family. I love it with salt on the rim but my husband only gets the rim half salted.

There is just something about licking the salt off the rim while sipping my Margarita that brings me joy. It is the little things in life these days that make me happy.

The Classic Frozen Margarita

You may also love a frozen Margarita. They are also delicious in my opinion but I love it on the rocks.

That’s not to say during the super hot summer months a frozen Margarita doesn’t hit the spot.

What desserts are eaten in Cinco de Mayo?

Some of the yummy desserts that are popular to celebrate Cinco de Mayo are:

  • Pastel de tres leches
  • Chocolate Tres Leches Cake
  • Churros
  • Cheese Flan

If you are looking for an amazing cheese flan recipe here is Easy Cheese Flan Recipe From Puerto Rico. This is a classic family recipe that is super easy to make and tastes AMAZING!!!

Trust me it will be your new BEST dish that your family and friends request of you.

OK now that we discussed the traditions of the holiday let’s get into the reason you stopped by.
