The quality is not durable, it will wear down very quickly, and can even tear under normal use. It’s definitely not the best leather chair but it’s an affordable way to get the look of leather on a budget.
If you just moved out of your parent’s home and need a chair to get you by for a few years then genuine leather may be for you.
How much does a good quality leather chair cost?
A good quality contemporary leather chair will cost on average between $1000 and $3,000 depending on the size and grade. Genuine leather chairs are more affordable while top and full-grain chairs will cost more.
If you have the space for two you can a pair from Crate & Barrel for just under $2000 which is a great value. The beauty of leather is its durable, comfortable, and easy to maintain.
Which leather is best for chairs?
The best leather chairs are made of full- or top-grain aniline leather. Full-grain leather is the strongest and most durable. This leather resists moisture, will look better with time, and develop a patina from being handled.
The second best leather is called “top-grain”. It’s similar to full-grain leather but the top couple of millimeters are sanded and buffed to take away imperfections. It has a uniform finish, but it won’t be as durable and will break down faster.
How much leather comes from the meat industry?
This probably isn’t what you want to hear but I need to keep it real my friends. I took a course in vegan design to educate myself and was shocked to learn they leather is NOT a by-product of the meat industry!
Sorry, to say but it’s the reality of the situation.
The truth is much of the leather sold today comes from animals killed for their skins alone. Nearly 1 billion animals are killed just for their skins.
If you’re interested in alternatives to leather after learning this vegan leather or fabric accent chairs are a great alternative. The best advice would be to educate yourself before you buy to make sure the leather is sustainably sourced and ethically produced.
