During my time as a design consultant at the furniture store, I was surprised by how many people wanted to buy a leather couch for their living room makeover. Up until then I was convinced that performance fabric sofas were the go-to for most homeowners.
Since leather sofas are super durable and timeless it makes sense why many people still love this style. The beauty of leather is it’s very easy to wipe clean and gets better as it ages. So I guess in a way it’s very similar to high-performance couches.
When it comes to modern leather sofa styles they are available in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. The range of colors comes in everything from classic tans, grey, black, navy, green, and yes even pink! The possibilities are endless.

Is genuine leather good for sofa?
Genuine leather is actually the lowest quality of all products made out of real leather. Goods marked as genuine leather are several layers of low-quality leather bonded together with glue. It’s then painted to look uniform.
The quality is not durable, it will wear down very quickly, and can even tear under normal use. It’s definitely not the best leather sofas but it’s an affordable way to get the look of leather on a budget.
If you just moved out of your parent’s home and need a sofa for the next few years a genuine leather sofa may be for you.
How much does a good quality leather sofa cost?
A good quality contemporary leather sofa will cost on average between $2000 and $10,000 depending on the size and grade. Smaller sofas are more affordable while leather sectionals will cost more.
If you have the space you can get the leather pit sectional below for just under $3700 which is a great value. The beauty of leather is its durable, comfortable, and easy to maintain.
Which leather is best for sofa?
The best leather sofas are made of full- or top-grain aniline leather. Full-grain leather is the strongest and most durable. This leather resists moisture, will look better with time, and develop a patina from being handled.
The second best leather is called “top-grain”. It’s similar to full-grain leather but the top couple of millimeters are sanded and buffed to take away imperfections. It has a uniform finish, but it won’t be as durable and will break down faster.
How much leather comes from the meat industry?
This probably isn’t what you want to hear but I need to keep it real my friends. I took a course in vegan design to educate myself and was shocked to learn they leather is NOT a by-product of the meat industry!
Sorry to say but it’s the reality of the situation.
The truth is much of the leather sold today comes from animals killed for their skins alone. Nearly 1 billion animals are killed just for their skins.
If you’re interested in alternatives to leather sofas after learning this performance fabric sofas are a great alternative. The best advice would be to educate yourself before you buy to make sure the leather is sustainably sourced and ethically produced.
