Do your research and check if these stores are local to you. Many of them are available both online and in person.

How does it work?

Buy now, pay later works exactly how it sounds you purchase the item today and pay for it at a later date. Once you select your furniture you can choose the “buy now, pay later” option at check out.

Not all stores offer this but check the list below for retailers that do. The service is usually offered by a third-party provider, not the furniture store directly.

Essentially your purchase will be divided into multiple equal payments over the course of several months or years depending on the program. The first payment will be made at the time of purchase with the remaining billed until the furniture is paid in full.

Whenever I purchase anything this way I make sure I could pay in full today if I had to. That way I know I’ll have no trouble making the monthly payments.

In the past, I have used this service when I needed to have cash on hand just in case. Instead of using my cash, I can let it collect interest while my payments are stretched out over time.

Another thing I ALWAYS do is pay it off early. The way they get you is if you only make the minimum payment and can’t pay in full on the due date.

If you go this route you’ll be hit with fees and interest which defeats the BYPL program. The best thing to do is divide the amount by one less equal payment.

For example, if you buy a $2000 sofa and have 0% finance for 12 months divide $2000 by 11 months. In this case, you’d pay $182 a month to be on the safe side and have it paid BEFORE the deadline.

Pay it off early so there are no added fees or interest.

Who is eligible for buy now, pay later?

Most shoppers 18 years and older with a good credit history will be eligible for buy now, pay later. When you apply for the loan the BNPL service company may require income verification and run a credit check.

The requirements will depend on the company providing the lending. Some may have more lenient requirements while others may be strict.

If you’re unsure if you’ll qualify call customer service BEFORE making your purchase. There’s nothing worse than getting declined after you have your heart set on that new sofa or furniture.

How to buy furniture on finance?

The first step to buying furniture on finance is to decide on the sofa or product you want to purchase. Once you know what and where you can apply for the store’s finance program.

Here are the steps to the buy now, pay later furniture process:

  1. Choose you furniture
  2. Select buy now pay later at checkout
  3. Submit your application
  4. Once approved select a payment plan
  5. Agree to a repayment schedule
  6. Make initial payment
  7. Set up automatic payments
  8. Make sure you have the payment funds available
  9. Pay off before the deadline to avoid penalties and fees

What is the difference between buy now, pay later, and a loan?

The difference between by now, pay later and a loan is with BNPL you’ll make small payments over a period of months or years. A loan is similar but the payments are usually larger and typically done over 5, 10, or 15 years.

With both types, you’ll be required to put down a deposit and make payments monthly. Most BNPL services offer 0% finance while loans have added interest charges and sometimes fees.

What companies offer this program?

The companies that offer the buy now, pay later for furniture are:

  1. Affirm: Select your payment plan at checkout and Affirm will give you a loan to cover your furniture purchase. You’ll make fixed monthly payments over a specified time until your purchase is paid in full.
  2. Klarna: Splits your furniture purchase into installments paid over time. They offer both interest-free installment plans and long-term finance options.
  3. Afterpay: Allows you to buy and pay for furniture in four equal installments. As long as you pay on time there will be no interest or fees.
  4. PayPal Credit: Acts as a line of credit. Enjoy No Interest if paid in full in 6 months on purchases of $99 or more.

Once you choose your furniture you can apply for Affirm or Klarna through the retailer if it’s offered. Trust me the sales associate wants to help you buy now especially if they work on commission!

Always check the fine print! Review the terms and conditions, interest rates, repayment schedules, and any fees associated with the “buy now, pay later” service before making a purchase.

If you hate surprises (like me) it’s best to know all the details upfront. This way you know exactly what you’re signing up for and can make an educated decision based on your financial situation.
