I’ve had the blue velvet counter stools above for years, and they’ve served us well. They’re comfortable, durable, and I still love the style, but as I’ve been updating my 20-year-old kitchen, I started wondering what the space would look like with something lighter.
Naturally, I had to create a few mockups before making a decision.

When I started searching for the best counter stools for kitchen islands, I found beautiful options at very different price points. Some were investment pieces, while others gave me a very similar look for hundreds of dollars less.
That’s when I started comparing my favorite designer counter stools with affordable alternatives.
One of my favorite designer options was around $746, but I found a similar counter stool for about $227. Another designer stool was $799, while the look-for-less version was around $176 for a set of two at the time I found it.
The third comparison might be the most interesting. The designer version was around $499 per stool, while I found a similar look for approximately $200 for a set of three.

There isn’t one best counter stool for every kitchen. The right choice depends on your kitchen style, how much space you have, and how your family actually uses the seating.
These are some of my favorite counter stools that are still available, ranging from modern upholstered styles to wood, acrylic, woven, and bistro-inspired options.
1. Velvet Counter Stool
This velvet counter stool is especially personal because I’ve owned four of them for years. They’ve been comfortable, durable, and surprisingly easy to maintain.
The cutout back adds interest without feeling too heavy. If you want your counter stools to become more of a statement in the kitchen, this is a great style to consider.
2. White Performance Fabric Counter Stool
If you love an upholstered look but worry about everyday messes, performance fabric is worth considering. This sculptural counter stool combines a softer upholstered seat with a more elevated silhouette.

Before you fall in love with a counter stool, measure your space. This is one of those purchases where a few inches can make the difference between a kitchen that feels comfortable and one that feels overcrowded.
Start with the height of your counter and then determine how many stools can comfortably fit across it.
What Height Should Counter Stools Be?
For a standard 36-inch kitchen counter, look for a counter stool with a seat approximately 24 to 26 inches high. That leaves enough room between the seat and countertop for comfortable seating.

Don’t confuse counter-height stools with bar-height stools. Bar stools are taller and are designed for taller surfaces, typically around 42 inches.
How Many Counter Stools Fit at a Kitchen Island?
As a general starting point, allow approximately 28 to 30 inches per seat when planning your kitchen island or peninsula seating. If space is tight, around 24 inches per person may work depending on the width and shape of the stools.
This is also why you shouldn’t buy stools based on looks alone. Measure the actual width of each stool and map out how many will fit before ordering.
Counter Stools With Backs or Backless?
I personally prefer counter stools with backs when they’re going to be used for more than quick meals. They offer more support and tend to be more comfortable when you’re sitting for longer periods.

For a small kitchen, look for counter stools with a slimmer frame and less visual weight. Open metal frames, acrylic stools, and styles with narrower backs can make the kitchen feel less crowded.
Backless counter stools are another option because they can disappear underneath the countertop when they’re not being used.
Designer Counter Stools vs. Look for Less
Here’s where I think shopping gets fun.
I love designer furniture, but I don’t believe every piece in a room has to be expensive. Sometimes the designer version has construction, materials, or details that make it worth the investment, and sometimes an affordable alternative gives you the look you want for much less.
For my own kitchen, I’m looking at the entire room and my overall budget, not just the counter stools.
If an affordable set of two or counter stools set of three gives me the look and function I need, I’m absolutely going to consider it.
Which Stool Would I Choose for My Kitchen?
Right now, I’m drawn to the lighter upholstered styles.
My kitchen has dark cherry cabinetry, dark countertops, and a busy backsplash, so I don’t necessarily want the counter stools adding another heavy element. The cream upholstery gives my eye a place to rest and helps lighten the overall look.
The mockups also remind me why I never recommend buying furniture in isolation. Something can be beautiful online and still not be the right choice for your room.
Create a floor plan. Make a mood board. Look at your finishes together. And when possible, create a mockup before spending the money.

Finding the best counter stools isn’t just about choosing the prettiest option. Think about height, comfort, width, durability, style, and how the stools relate to everything else happening in your kitchen.
