If you are starting the process of designing your dorm room there are so many essentials you’ll want to have. Since many college students only spend the first year or two on campus you’ll probably want to design on a budget.
That said Amazon is an awesome choice for dorm room supplies and decor. When my daughter started her college journey at Hawaii Pacific University this fall we did EVERYTHING from Amazon.
This made the process go pretty smoothly since we planned it out before she went and then ordered everything all in one shot. By doing this everything came within the week and she was able to put the room together pretty quickly.
I should add that she did arrive with all her bedding so she was able to set up her bed minus the decorative pillows right away. If you are looking for ideas and inspiration to design your dorm room from Amazon this post is for you!

The bedding is a very important part of the dorm room planning. It is not just about the decor as it is the comfort too! There is nothing worse than a bad night’s sleep while away from home.
To avoid any issues with bed bugs you’ll want to purchase both pillow and mattress protectors.
For extra comfort a mattress topper is perfect. There are different thickness options but we went with the 2.5″ memory foam gel. The exact one we purchased is linked above.
The bedding my daughter chose was all white. She went with the twin-size sheets but a full-size duvet and comforter. She was supposed to wash the duvet during the semester but that did not happen. If this sounds like you get a comforter but you need a larger machine to wash it.
Even in Hawaii, my daughter packed a fuzzy blanket. There is usually air conditioning in the dorms so extra bedding will come in handy.
We purchased the space saver bags but they do add weight to your luggage so if you are flying you may not want to use these. For those driving to campus, they are great for compressing your bedding and clothes.

For the bathroom, you’re going to need a bath and beach towels depending on where you are going to college.
In the shower area, you’ll want to get a shower curtain, rod, and rings. The get-naked curtain is super cute and a fun way to add your personality.
You can also add artwork in the bathroom. An inexpensive way to do that is to add printable artwork to simple black frames.
Since you are most likely sharing the bathroom with roommates the white bathrobe will come in handy. You never know which one of your friends will have company over when you get out of the shower so just a towel wrapped around you won’t work!

Every college student will need a laundry basket to store their dirty clothes. Throwing it on the floor in a pile until wash day will not do when you want to invite your new college friends over.
A nice-sized broom and dustpan is a good idea to keep crumbs off the floor. The last thing you want to attract in your dorm room is unwanted critters.
Since ironing is probably not going to happen a steamer is the next best thing to get the wrinkles out. This way even if your clothes are in a ball they can be saved and you’ll look presentable.

You will want to talk to your roommates about the kitchen essentials because you only need one per dorm room. The Keurig is a must-have for every college student who loves their coffee. The pods are not cheap but if you buy them in bulk or on sale you will save.
The rice maker is great because you will make perfect rice every time. It took me years to master white rice and the secret was a rice cooker. If you like soggy rice stick to the pot but if you want fluffy perfect rice the cooker will be your best friend!
A blender is perfect for smoothies and blending your favorite frozen drinks. Let’s not pretend that’s not a thing, shall we?!

When it comes to organization, you need slim hangers so you can maximize that small closet space. The hanging rod is great to add if you only have one to start.
The cart is essential and will last you through the four years of college. Whether you keep it by your bed or in the bathroom it is the perfect place to organize all your personal belongings.
Having a mirror on your desk is great for when you want to get ready and the bathroom is occupied. Remember you are sharing these spaces so the more you have in your dorm room the better off you’ll be.
The best thing my daughter said we packed was the push pins! Since her college does not allow command strips these were essential to hang all her dorm room decor.

There are never enough outlets in the dorms so a surge protector is a major must-have. This one is great because it has USB ports as well so you can charge your electronics too!
A portable charger is great when you are on adventures for the day with limited access to an outlet. You can even let your friend charge their phone too with the multi-port if you want to be nice.
The next few items are perfect for the dorm common area. If you are a TV watcher then this is essential. My daughter uses her computer to watch Netflix but the Firestick is awesome for the TV. Don’t forget the HDMI cable!
In my experience, you should back up your computer and back up the backup! It is essential for any important projects or files you don’t want to lose. You will thank me later for this one I promise!

They are probably the last things you were thinking about which is why I’m sharing them. You may not need that tool kit the first year but the second you move off-campus you will be glad you have it.
You never know when an accident will happen so it’s best to be prepared. This first aid kit is sure to come in handy.
My daughter thought I was crazy for sending her with a flashlight but when there is a blackout and her phone is dead she’ll be grateful to have it.
As you can see Amazon is a great resource for all your college dorm room needs. We were able to buy 99% of the items from there and had no issues. They shipped to Hawaii in about a week but if you are local they should arrive in 2 days!
