Shopping for college is an exciting but overwhelming process. There are so many things to think of and essentials to buy for college.

Having gone through this experience we found the best place to get dorm stuff for us was Amazon. That’s because my daughter went to college at Hawaii Pacific University.

Since we live in NY there was a limited amount of college dorm room stuff could travel with. If you are bringing your college dorm decor with you this list of the top places to shop for dorm stuff is for you!

Here are the best places to buy dorm stuff for 2024.

You may be familiar with many of these places to get dorm stuff but may not have heard of the niche shops. Both DormCo and Dormify focus on all things dorm rooms which is great because it’s one-stop shopping.

College planning does not have to be stressful. The secret is to plan as much ahead of time as possible.

Having been through this before I know the four years will go fast so let’s all enjoy the journey!

For any parents reading this please remember you are essentially paying for an experience. Yes, your child will get an education but they also need to grow and have fun as people too.

Let them figure it out. Then at the end of the four years, you will be that much closer to having an ADULT child which is the goal. NO?!

As long as my child graduates with a bachelor’s degree, in a major of her choice, and enjoys the ride we are good! Look at it this way… You pay for daycare at the start of the journey and then again at the end. Ha Ha!!

That’s my thoughts and opinion on the subject anyway.

Through the process of project Get Bella’s ass to Hawai’i, we discovered the best places to shop for dorm stuff. Some we looked at for dorm ideas because it was hard to ship from.

When the time finally came the majority of dorm stuff we ordered was from Amazon and Urban Outfitters.

Since Bella stayed in the dorm the first year her bedroom was the most important. Going forward she’ll be off-campus so she will need living room and kitchen stuff too.

During freshman year she just needed a bedroom, bath essentials, and some kitchen things. She also had three other roommates who all purchased stuff for the loft dorm suite they shared as well.

Now for the details on the best dorm room shopping sites in no particular order:

1. Amazon

Amazon is the most convenient place to get dorm stuff. We bought 99% of Bella’s dorm stuff there.

They have every vendor and the shipping is ridiculously fast.

Shipping to Hawai’i Pacific University was not two days but the prices were the best. This was the go-to shop to buy dorm stuff for college in Hawai’i.

2. Walmart

By far the most cost-effective on-trend resource for college shopping.

Walmart is also a great place to shop for food depending on how close it is located to the campus. For my daughter, it is close to Hawaii Pacific University so she shops there often.

3. Target

Do I need to give any explanation for Tarjay?!

The value and product offerings at Target are always trendy and up-to-date. When it comes to dorm shopping it’s no different. They have everything you could need for your dorm room.

4. Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters has awesome products to add personality and style to your dorm room.

We were obsessed with their bedding BUT it was on backorder. So we canceled the order and found white bedding at Target.

Urban Outfitters is also a great resource for affordable furniture and home decor that will look fabulous in your off-campus housing.

There is a store in Hawaii so my daughter was able to pick up a few dorm decor items in person.

5. The Container Store

The container store is perfect for all your dorm room organization needs.

This is one of the best places to buy stuff for college that will keep you super organized and productive.

6. IKEA

If you are looking for cheap dorm stuff then Ikea is for you. We did not have that option but definitely would have shopped here if we could.

If you do not have a store close by you can still purchase those blue large travel bags everyone loves on Amazon.

They are awesome if you are traveling by car to your college dorm.

7. Etsy

Etsy is a great place to shop for unique pillows, accessories, and wall decor.

Plus you get the bonus of supporting small businesses and many shop owners’ side hustles!

8. Overstock

If you need some filler items this is a place to check out. For those who are comfortable ordering online, Overstock is a place to shop for college.

9. Red Bubble

Red Bubble is an awesome place to shop for stickers to personalize your computer, water bottles, helmets, and more. Bella ordered 10 stickers in total. She loves them all!

10. SHEIN

Shein is a super inexpensive place to shop for cool dorm decor. They have longer shipping times (it comes from China) but it’s worth the wait. Shein has many original finds to make your dorm room special.

We ordered a pillow cover from here but somehow lost it before Bella left for college. Not sure how that happened?!

11. DormCo

This is a great place to shop, especially for dorm packages.

Their main niche is dorm rooms so they have that “look and feel” department covered.

12. Dormify

Similar to DormCo, they specialize in all things dorm rooms. Above all, they are a great resource.

Since Bella goes to college at Hawai’i Pacific University we were not able to shop at all of these. However, for most freshmen, they are awesome resources.
