Round Coffee Tables
The coffee table you choose will help create the look and feel of your space. When choosing your table you will want to think about the shape, style, height, and material of the table. Not all tables are created the same!
Tips For Sourcing
When it comes to style there are many options. There are the classic shapes, layered tables and even bunching tables.
You may want a more formal coffee table in your living room depending on how you have it decorated. More fragile and delicate surfaces such as glass can be used in living rooms.
A family room needs a sturdier coffee table. You may also want to look for one that has storage options, like drawers. The surface should be able to take abuse because spilled snacks or feet on the table are more common in casual settings. Glass tops are generally not suitable for family rooms, not just because of fragility, but finger marks and scratches too. For glass-tops without frames, there is the danger of sharp corners, especially when you have small children.
Take a look at your room and other furniture to determine what material would look best. Clear acrylic and glass can make a small room look more open. The glint of metal can accomplish the same purpose. Glass, acrylic, metal, and stone also look good in a modern room.
Glass tables are less bulky than wood or metal and easier to wipe down. Plus, if you can’t find a coaster, it’s OK to put your drink on glass.
Coffee tables are available in many different shapes. While the shape of the room can play a role in choosing a coffee table, you must pay attention to your seating configuration more than anything else.
Your coffee table should be approximately two-thirds the length of your sofa. So for a 96-inch sofa, for instance, you should look for a coffee table that’s 64 inches long.
The ideal distance from the edge of the sofa to the edge of the table is 18 inches—close enough to reach for your drink or put a magazine down, but far enough to stretch out your legs. People often leave too much or not enough room. If you have other seats in the room that you want to reach the coffee table, follow the same 18-inch rule.
A rectangular or oval coffee table works well for smaller rooms.
Squares or round coffee tables are good for large seating configurations, such as large sectionals or a large sofa and a love seat.
If you have kids, an oval or round table is a smart choice, since sharp corners and little ones aren’t a good match. And if you need extra storage (like most families do), a table with one shelf or more underneath is a great idea.
A coffee table’s height is key. The surface should be about one or two inches lower than your sofa seat (or the same height). Standard tables are 16 to 18 inches high, but if you have a higher couch or entertain a lot, consider a taller table—20 or 21 inches—so it’s easy for guests to set down their dessert plate or cut a piece of cheese.
Coffee tables are available in very low and extremely high price points. If you want a unique look with quality materials be prepared to spend between $800 to $2000. Remember the saying you get what you pay for when it comes to quality. If you like to change your space often you make want a lower cost option. For those who design and forget it, you will be more likely to invest in a quality statement piece. Depending on how unique your round coffee table is it can become the focal point of the room.
There are many color and material options to choose from when it comes to coffee tables. If you love gold like me you can get wood or marble mixed with wood. I love decorative coffee tables like the Arhaus Kalmin Coffee Table. For a while I was obsessed with the Everly Quinn Distefano 3 Piece Coffee Table Set by Sunpan. In the end, we got one similar to the Verdad Round White Marble Coffee Table from Crate & Barrel but with gold metal. The top material is cement which is super durable and heavy.
