Bed Bath And Beyond Dorm Essentials
Now that college prep season is here it’s time to start thinking about everything you will need. Whether you are a freshman or first-time dorm resident the best way NOT to get overwhelmed is by being prepared.
My daughter just completed her first year at Hawaii Pacific University where she lived in the college dorm. To make the process easier we researched dorm essentials from a variety of retailers.
This way we had a comparison of products and prices prior to arriving on campus.
Since we live in NY we found the best place for HPU dorm room ideas was Amazon because the shipping was free and fast. If you are on the mainland or states then Bed Bath and Beyond may be a better choice for your college dorm essentials.
Either way here is a list of college freshman essentials to help you start the process.
This post is all about Bed Bath & Beyond dorm essentials.
Bed Bath & Beyond Dorm Essentials
During the college essentials planning, we discovered a great Bed Bath and Beyond dorm service they offer.
They actually have a FREE Moving Solutions program for college students.
Instead of packing up and hauling your stuff across the country or state, you can just head to your local Bed Bath & Beyond or online to do your shopping.
While at the store you scan your items and then pick them up at the local Bed Bath & Beyond closest to campus.
The Aiea Hawai’i Bed Bath & Beyond informed us to put the location where we will make the pickup before scanning. That way if an item is NOT available you won’t be able to scan it.
You can contact your local Bed Bath & Beyond store for more details on this awesome program.
Don’t forget your 20% off coupon when you go!

Bedding
One of the most important places to start when putting together your Bed Bath and Beyond college list is with your bedding. This is because getting a good night’s sleep is essential to being productive and peak performance in college.
That said it’s important to dress your mattress with a topper and protector. This will ensure maximum comfort over the mattress provided by the college.

Dorm Bath
When it comes to college freshman essentials the bath is another super important area to consider. You will need your own set of towels for the shower and beach if you are near the ocean.
Depending on your roommate’s situation you may chip in to purchase the communal items such as the bath rug, curtain, wastebasket, and cleaner.
This is something you will want to discuss as soon as you know your living situation. My daughter had a group chat with her roommates and they split the purchases amongst each other.
In our experience, this is the way to go because if you chip in and then don’t live together the following semester it can become a problem.

Laundry & Cleaning
When it comes to the laundry essentials a laundry basket is key so the dirty clothes do not wind up on the floor.
Also unless your college student loves to iron a steamer is the way to go.

Room Decor • Bed Bath & Beyond Dorm Essentials
The best way to personalize your college dorm is with fun dorm room decor. Adding decorative pillows, a neon sign, and a letter board is some dorm ideas that will add originality.
The chair is great for your dorm room or common area depending on the size of your space. It is always nice to have extra seating for when your friends stop by.
Kitchen
(most will be figured out with her roommates)
This is another area to communicate with your new roommates. You do not all need to purchase dorm kitchen essentials and colleges usually only allow one per space.
Double-check the college website to find out what is allowed for your kitchen dorm essentials.

Storage & Organization
(items without links are unavailable)
- HANGERS
- DOUBLE CLOSET ROD
- STACKING DRAWS
- STORAGE CART
- VANITY MIRROR
- PAINTERS TAPE
- PUSH PINS
Since the closet and storage in dorm rooms are usually tight the more you have to maximize the space the better. The double closet rod is perfect because it will add a second layer of hanging space for your clothes.
When it comes to your hangers go for the slimline velvet hangers instead of the bulky plastic ones. This is another way to maximize your small closet space.
The stacking draws will help keep you organized and this one has a shelf that is adjustable. No matter the height of your dorm bed your belongings will be close by.
A storage cart will come in handy to store all your toiletries instead of leaving them out in the bathroom. Since it is on wheels it will be easy to move around your dorm room.
Painter’s tape and push pins are perfect for planning your wall decor. My daughter’s college did not allow command strips so she had to use push pins for everything. You can get both of these at your local Home Depot.

- SURGE PROTECTOR
- PORTABLE CHARGER
- TV
- HDMI CABLE
- FLASH DRIVE
Now for some college room essentials, you may not be thinking about. A surge protector with extra outlets is great because there are usually never enough outlets.
You are also going to want to have a portable charger for when you are on the go. These come in a variety of sizes but we have always had one with multiple ports.
That way you can help a friend out and charge your own phone at the same time.
While some college freshmen prefer to watch TV on their laptops others enjoy the real deal. Depending on the type of TV watcher you are is whether or not you need to invest in an actual TV.
The last item on this list is a college tech essential in my opinion. A flash drive is great to back up your important files so just in case there is an accident you have your hard work saved.
This is one of those things you’ll thank me for later!
Ready For Anything
(items without links are unavailable)
- TOOL KIT
- FIRST AID KIT
- FLASHLIGHT
- UMBRELLA
Here are a few extras that will definitely come in handy. A tool kit is a must-have for any college student especially when you move off-campus. This way you can hang things like curtains, shelves, and wall decor in your off-campus housing.
The first aid kit and flashlight are two things that you’ll be happy to have when and if you need them. My daughter thought I was crazy for sending a flashlight but better safe than sorry!
Last on the list is the umbrella which is awesome for those rainy days.
Any items on the list that do not have a link are not available at Bed Bath and Beyond.
